Once I had a colleague who never seem to be happy. Even when things were going right for her, she always had something to complain about. She was critical of the people around her and always seemed to be brooding about minor and uncontrollable events in her life. She was extremely smart and talented, but never seems to fully achieve her goals. And it was then that I realized that it wasn’t her intellect, nor her talent, nor the people around her that kept her from reaching her goals. It was her mindset. How can we avoid this pitfall and cultivate the right mindset for success?

Acknowledge that life is difficult

I didn’t have the easiest childhood. I endured a lot of hardships and felt that life owed it to me, even just a little bit, to make my life easy. I complained a lot – even the smallest of things. It wasn’t until I read M. Scott Peck’s book entitled, “The Road Less Travelled”, that I started to see difficulties in a different way, and cultivate the right mindset. This book changed my life for the better in the first 30 words. M. Scott Peck acknowledged that life is difficult. However, once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. If you accept the fact that life was never meant to be easy, then the hardships you’re facing are just normal. Instead of being consumed with the negative, you can change your mindset and focus on how to move past it.

Determine your goal

Some people go through life without having a clear goal. It’s as if they are riding a boat in a fast-moving river and they left the row on the riverbank. They’re just letting the water wash them away in different directions without a clear destination. Having a clear goal will anchor you so that you don’t get lost in the waves of the water.

Determine what mindset is needed

Once you have a clear goal in mind, identify what kind of mindset is needed in order to achieve it. Having the right mindset is beyond just thinking positively. It is goes much deeper than that. You need to identify what it is in particular that will help you achieve your goal. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, your mindset is focused on taking care of your body. Exercise and avoiding unhealthy food can be quite challenging but if your mindset is to have a healthier lifestyle, then it will help you stay on track.

Don’t stop learning

Cultivating the right mindset is a relatively new concept in psychology. Fortunately, a lot of psychologists are researching and discussing how the right mindset can help one in achieving his goal. Talks and articles by Carol Dweck and Gabrielle Bernstein are great resources about the kind of mindset that can help one succeed.

Surround yourself with people who share the same mindset

Changing your mindset might also involve changing the people whom you spend time with. Having the same outlook in life can make it easier to make changes in your life and also help you stick to your new mindset, even if it is hard. Learn how they think and how you can apply the same thing in your own life.

Cultivating a positive mindset is no easy feat. It involves a person jumping out of their comfort zone and trying out something new. It can really be a scary thing to do but certainly something that will be rewarding. Changing your mindset to a positive one will certainly change your future for the better.
